Because a fountain changes how the water is presented, not whether your cat is interested in it. That is why the story is so often the same: a brilliant first week, real curiosity, and then it slowly turns into an expensive thing you clean on Sundays.

This works from the other direction. Rather than making the bowl more appealing, it gives the water itself a smell and taste your cat actually wants. And because it stirs into wet food just as easily, it does not depend on your cat walking over to a bowl at all.

It changes the maths. Cats fed wet food take in a large share of their water with the meal itself. On a dry diet that share simply is not there, so the whole amount has to come from the bowl instead.

If your cat is a dry-food cat, you have two ways to use this. Stir it into their water, or add a splash of water to the biscuits and stir it through that.

Most owners do not, and that is not carelessness. Cats drink in short visits, often at night, often from the tap or a plant pot or a puddle in the garden. With more than one cat in the house it stops being measurable at all.

If you want a rough read, put out one bowl for a few days, fill it from a measuring jug and note what goes back in. And if your cat’s drinking changes noticeably in either direction, that is a conversation for your vet rather than for us. A sudden shift in thirst is worth a professional look.

We would rather you went in assuming it might not work. Fussy cats refuse things for reasons that have very little to do with taste: an unfamiliar smell on a familiar bowl, a change in texture, or the fact that you stood there watching them.

What we can say is that this is a fine powder that dissolves rather than sitting on the surface, and that how you introduce it matters more than most people expect. Start with a fraction of a scoop for the first few days and build up from there. A lot of refusals come from going in at full strength on day one.

Cats cannot taste sweetness at all. What draws them is savoury and meaty, and more than anything it is smell rather than taste that decides whether they commit to a bowl.

That is what this is built around. It is salmon, and the flavour is there for one purpose only, which is to make the water worth walking over to.

There is one flavour and there will not be a range. Salmon is about as close to a safe bet as cats allow, and a single base that most cats accept beats a shelf of options where you gamble on picking the right one. If your cat has ever reacted badly to fish, this is not the one for you.

We would rather carry that cost than have another unopened tub sitting at the back of your cupboard next to the fountain.

In wet food: mix one scoop all the way through the meal rather than leaving it sitting on top. A cat that spots something new on the surface is far more likely to walk away from the whole bowl.

In water: one scoop per 250 ml, stirred until it dissolves, then empty and refill the bowl every day. Flavoured water is not the same as plain water and it does not keep.

Once a day either way, at whichever meal fits your routine. Doing it at the same time each day is worth more than doing it at the perfect time.

One 3 g scoop per cat per day, and the scoop is in the tub. There are no weight bands to work out. Almost every adult cat sits between 3 and 6 kg, and one level scoop covers that whole range.

If your cat is over roughly 7 kg, use one and a half. For the first three or four days use half a scoop while your cat gets used to the smell, then move up to the full amount.

Faster than you would expect, because the thing you are watching for is behaviour rather than anything you have to measure. Either your cat goes to the bowl and drinks, or it does not. Most owners have a clear answer inside the first week.

If your cat is cautious at first, give it the full ten days at a reduced amount before you decide. Cats reject new smells first and reconsider later, which is exactly why we made the guarantee 60 days rather than 14.

Measure per cat and add it to separate bowls where you can. In a shared water bowl you have no way of knowing who drank what, and in a multi-cat house there is usually one confident drinker and one who waits.

If separate bowls are not realistic, dose for the total number of cats and put out more than one water station in different rooms. That is worth doing regardless of what you stir into it.

Ask your vet first, and take the tub with you so they can read the label themselves. This is a complementary pet food rather than a veterinary product, and if your cat is being treated for anything, your vet is the one who should decide what goes in the bowl alongside it.

The same applies if your cat is pregnant, nursing, or still a very young kitten.

Not at all, but use the wet food route rather than the water route. A cat that has decided the tap is the only acceptable source is not going to be talked out of it by anything you put in a bowl.
